Human Resources will publish and
distribute a job announcement for each vacant position (when recruitment
is necessary). A job announcement will contain the following:
- Job title
- Salary
- Benefits
- Essential functions of the job
- Acceptable experience and training (i.e., minimum qualifications)
- Additional requirements (i.e., licenses, certifications)
- Application and selection process information
- Written test date, time, and location (if applicable), and
- Closing date for application documents.
Applicants are typically required to submit a City of Little Rock application (original or legible copy) for each desired position. Applicants must submit applications and any other documents required (listed under APPLICATION PROCESS in the job announcement) by the closing date.
Selection Process
The Human Resources Department will
determine which components will be utilized to evaluate candidate
qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for each advertised
position. (NOTE: The selection process will be included in the job
announcement.) Any one or a combination of the following components may be
utilized:
- Résumé/Job History/Training and Experience Questionnaire (T&E) / Information Supplement to Application.
These tools provide specific information about a candidate's experience, training, and license/certifications. Please note that résumés, training and experience questionnaires, and information supplements must be as complete as possible, including all dates of employment and complete listing of job duties where required. The information presented will be utilized to screen applications to ensure minimum qualifications are met.
- Written Examination
For positions requiring the administration of a written exam, it is the applicant's responsibility to report to the test location on the written test date and time (listed in the job announcement in the section titled Application Process). Applicants are required to pass the exam to be eligible for further consideration.
- Practical/Skills Exam
Targeted positions in the City require the administration of a practical skills test to ensure applicants possess the prerequisite skills (i.e., typing, automotive repair). Practical skills tests may be scheduled after applicants have been screened to ensure the minimum qualifications have been met or in conjunction with a written test. Check announcement for testing components and schedule.
For positions requiring equipment operation (i.e., dump truck), applicants are screened to ensure licensure and applicable experience is present before scheduling an equipment operations test. It is the applicant's responsibility to report to the practical exam test site on the date and time contained in the notification letter.
Referral Process
Only qualified applicants will be referred to the hiring authority for consideration. After the Human Resources Department has referred the applications to the hiring department, further inquiries concerning the status should be directed to that specific hiring authority. The Human Resources Department will be contacted by the hiring department when the final selection has been made.
Hiring / Sign Up Process
Post-offer-of-employment medical examinations and/or drug and alcohol screens are required for certain positions. Such evaluations will be administered only for those candidates who have been selected to fill a position. These exams are conducted at the City’s expense.
New employees are required to complete the sign-up process in the Human Resources Department on or before the first day of employment. Additionally, new full-time employees will be scheduled to attend an orientation session which will be conducted at a later date to provide information concerning the City's benefits, policies, etc.
