"The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for working single parent and two parent families that earn low to moderate incomes. To claim this credit, workers must file a tax return and complete a schedule EIC on their annual tax return. The credit can provide quite a bit of money directly into low to moderate-income families' pockets. For example, in 2001 a working family raising more than one child earning less than $33,178 could qualify for up to $4,140. For 2002, the qualifying income level has been raised to $34,000. The latest numbers for Little Rock that we have are for the year 2000. For that year over $34,200,000 in EITC payments were made, with a per-return average of $1,804. That money goes directly back into the local economy. Coupled with the refundable child tax credit, which is currently about 1/7 the size of the EITC, this program can be a significant source of income for a down payment on reliable transportation or a first home.
