Training & Professional Development Division

The Training & Professional Development Division is overseen by Division Chief Bernie Sherwood. The Divisions primary focus is to develop and provide the highest quality training and education to the members of the Little Rock Fire Department and the public they serve. Compliance with a multitude of complex federal, state and local standards and regulations is ensured by the actions of this Division. Programs are delivered in the following areas:

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (for F.D. members only)
  • Vehicle Extrication
  • Fire Suppression and Emergency Operations
  • Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF)
  • Urban Search & Rescue (USAR)
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)
  • Officer and Career Development
  • Annual Recruit School (IFSAC Certified Firefighter I & II)

Staff continues to research new equipment, methods, technology and subjects that will improve departmental functions and ensure the safety of all personnel. Routine tasks for the Training Division include:

  • Development of programs
  • Revise existing curriculum
  • Maintenance of instructor skills
  • Acquisition of new materials
  • Employing computer based training
  • Participation in applicant and promotional testing

The Training staff consists of four Captains, and is supplemented by adjunct instructors throughout the Department. The Training and Professional Development Division is located at the Little Rock Fire Department Training & Support Services Complex at 7000 Murray Street. The facility consists of state-of-the-art classrooms, offices, a physical fitness area and a large outside drill ground. The Drill Tower/Burn Building is the first of its kind in the State of Arkansas, and is equipped with the latest in safety devices to ensure our firefighters are trained appropriately and, more importantly, safely.
